First, I broke the image down by sketching out a contour, then outlining the largest shapes. Playing with the opacity created the feel of shadows and light through the composition, and I decided on colors closer in hue to keep a harmonious tone throughout the piece.

What can I say—I guess at heart, I'm a bit of a romantic. 😉
